If you sit all day, you need this stretch!

I used to work in a job where I sat down all day.  I remember the feeling well- after hours of sitting, I would stand up (or try to) and feel as though my hips were still bent as though I was sitting down.

This stretch is great for people who sit all day, as your hip flexors are in a flexed position whenever you are sitting down.  We are aiming to lengthen the muscles at the front of the hip including Rectus Femoris and Iiliopsoas.

It’s important to take regular breaks from sitting- find an excuse to get up!  Stand while you’re on the phone, go and fill your drink bottle, or take a break to stretch.

Stretching should never be painful- you should only feel a mild to moderate stretch in the hip and thigh.

Hold the stretch on each leg for around 30 seconds.

  • Kneel with one knee on the floor and the other foot in front with the knee bent
  • Gently push your hips forwards and keep the back upright
  • You should feel a mild to moderate stretch in the front of your thigh and hip
